Workshop in Venda at Tshidimbini church of Christ

03/13/2023

What an incredible experience going to Venda and meeting all these wonderful people.
It was quite a trip to get to Venda, a 8 hour bus ride. On the way we were in the plaines and saw nothing but beautiful trees and small homes here and there. We did pass by Praetoria which is the capital of South Africa and it was very large. Seeing the country this way makes one see that there are those who have and have not in every country. As we approached Venda, I think I saw the most orchards that I have ever seen in my life. They went on for over an hour and a half of our trip. Mango's, Avacados, bananas and probably many many more that I did not know. What an amazing display of feeding so many people. On the side of the road I would not want to be a street vendor because everyone is selling the same fruit, for miles and miles. It is amazing how much produce is being grown in this part of Africa.
When we arrived a few of us visited some of the elders and took a tour of the facility. The Tshidimbini church of Christ has over 800 who attend every week. They have bible class for the kids and worship at the same time so they break off into these groups. It was a good visit and a time to prepare for the workshop the next day.
When we got to the workshop, I had the opportunity to learn a few greetings in Venda. The folks here seemed to appreciate it and that was very nice. We had around 200 people show up for the workshop and many from the surrounding congregations. The church is strong in Venda with over 50 congregations in this area and in this tribe. The men taught on leadership and the women did their presentations on Sunday school teaching. It was an amazing experience, even though it was very hot. Over 85 degrees and no air conditioning and high humidity. I was asked about a bible and gave the one I had to the gentleman. I now wish I would have packed more bibles and some of our song books to share with the many churches that are here.
As we left, we were invited to the Chief of the Venda tribes home. This is a high honor as not very many are invited. We went to his home and he had a traditional hut built in his back yard for us to congregate. We sang some songs, prayed and listened to some history of the Venda people. His brother, the big man, came out and talked with us. Unfortunately, the chief himself was busy at this time and not able to join us. It was still an amazing experience and one I will always remember.
On our way back to the hotel we had the chance to see some wonderful waterfalls. It was however a long hike down to see them. I helped Paulette as far down as she was comfortable, but the rocky stairs the last bit was to steep for her to be able to join. What an amazing view and we spent some time taking pictures together and enjoying this beautiful place in Venda. As we got back to the hotel, I was able to enjoy a cool off in the pool. We then met for dinner with a fantastic view and enjoyed the evening together. This was a wonderful day and a terrific workshop.
Blessings,
Luke
